Alta Gaither Howell
Alta Gaither Howell, age 94, of 305 West Walnut, Leitchfield, died April 17, 2010, at Grayson Manor.
She was born March 16, 1916, a daughter of C.R and Minnie Williams Gaither, in the Sadler Community. She attended the one-room Freedom Elementary School, Leitchfield High School, and graduated from Bryant-Stratton Business College in Louisville.
She worked for many years as a bookkeeper for Willis Brothers Ford and Foster's Gas Company in Leitchfield. She had a fantastic recipe for pimento cheese, loved a good hotdog, had an arsenal of water guns she used to deter squirrels and cats from the birdfeeder, and loved to go fishing. She kept up with news of her community and the state by reading local newspapers and the Courier-Journal. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and the Eastern Star.
She married Don Howell of Leitchfield, on August 20, 1954.
She is survived by two sisters, Betty Taylor, Leitchfield, and Kayo (Kathlene) Bevil, Beaver Dam, Ky.; eight nieces and nephews, Diana Kay Sandefur, Jerry Bevil, Larry Bevil and David Bevil, all of Beaver Dam, Greg Taylor, Madison, Wis., Michele Hartner, Salt Lake City, Utah, Mark Anthony Taylor, Boise, Id., and Denise Taylor-Wheaton, Rockford, Ill.; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Her husband and a sister, Eula (Pete) Gaither, preceded her in death.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Dermitt's Funeral Home, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 19. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
