Barbara Jean Mahurin, age 82, of Tousey, Kentucky, entered into her heavenly home on September 5, 2026, at her home in Tousey, surrounded by the family she loved so dearly.

Barbara was born December 19, 1943, in Broadford, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Aud and Odeline Logsdon. Growing up with 7 other siblings, she was surrounded by the large family that helped shape the woman she would become, hardworking, devoted, faithful, and fiercely loving of her own family.

Barbara dedicated 33 years of her life to caring for and bringing joy to the residents of Spring View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, formerly Aide Acres, where she served as Activity Director. To Barbara, the residents were far more than part of her job. She poured her heart into making their days brighter, ensuring they felt remembered, included, and cared for. Her commitment to the residents and her community was recognized when she was presented with a Key to the City of Leitchfield in honor of her many years of dedicated service.

As meaningful as her work was, Barbara’s greatest life’s work could always be found at home and within her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and caregiver. She lovingly cared for her sister Geraldine and spent a lifetime making certain the people she loved knew they could depend on her. If someone in her family needed her, Barbara was there, without hesitation and without keeping score.

She was a busy homemaker who found joy in many of life’s simplest traditions. She tended her garden and canned food to make sure her family had plenty. She sewed beautiful quilts, cooked countless meals, and every opening morning of deer season could be counted on to have breakfast ready for a houseful of hungry hunters. She enjoyed taking adventures with her sisters, Sue and Geraldine, and those trips created stories and memories that her family will treasure and undoubtedly continue telling for years to come.

Barbara had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. Her home was a place where family gathered, stories were told, meals were shared, and there was rarely a dull moment. She supported her entire family with all of her whole heart. Whatever they chose to pursue, Barbara was there, encouraging them, cheering for them, worrying over them, campaigning for them, praying or requesting prayer for them, and loving them with one hundred percent dedication. Her family never had to wonder whether Barbara was in their corner; they simply knew she was.

Her faith was also an important part of the life she lived. Barbara was a member of Wilson Home General Baptist Church and also frequently attended the church of her childhood in Broadford. She carried her faith with her throughout her life, and it brought her comfort as she grew older.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elliot Ray Mahurin; her daughter-in-law, Debbie Mahurin; her parents, Aud and Odeline Logsdon; and her siblings, Jimmy Logsdon, Hershall Logsdon, Alma Dale Tomes, Geraldine Logsdon, Larry Logsdon, Gary Logsdon, and an infant sister, Evelyn Logsdon.

Barbara is survived by her sister, Sue Edwards; her three children, Steve (Teresa) Mahurin, Pam Jaggers, and Cyndi Lively; her grandchildren, Samantha (Joseph) Embry, Kresenda (Jackie) Frank, Amanda (Mike) Frank, Jessica (Mitchell) Mahurin, Chaz (Laila) Lively, and Macy Lively; her step-grandchildren, Alex Shellhart and Cody (Emily) Shellhart; five great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren, along with many other relatives, friends, and loved ones whom she considered her children as well and whose lives were made better simply because Barbara was part of them.

Barbara spent her life making sure the people she loved never had to wonder whether someone would be there for them. In the end, she was given that same gift. She did not leave this world alone; she left it surrounded by generations of the family she had helped build, nurture, and hold together.

Though her chair may now be empty and the familiar traditions will never feel quite the same without her, Barbara’s presence will remain in a thousand ordinary places, in a quilt carefully stitched together, jars lined along a pantry shelf, breakfast cooking before an opening-morning hunt, laughter around a crowded table, an old family story told one more time, and in every gathering where the family she loved continues to show up for one another.

That may be the greatest part of Barbara Jean Mahurin’s legacy: she taught her family how to take care of one another. And they will carry that love with them always.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, (September 12, 2026) at the Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield. Burial will be in the Mahurin Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the Dermitt Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday and from 9:00 a.m. Saturday until time of services.
