Charles Raymond "Red" Smith, 83, was born in Bowling Green, KY on March 29th, 1926. Charles passed peacefully at home on October 16th, 2009. Charles was preceded in death by his mother Rubye Dyer, father Bernie W. Smith Sr., brother Bernie W. Smith Jr. and sister Margaret as well as her husband Vincent Sherry.
Left to cherish his memory, his loving wife Ann Hall Smith, son Donald, his wife Phyllis Smith, grandson Christopher, granddaughter Carrie, great-granddaughter Alexandra, aunts Edwina Manning and Nettie London Harris, sister-in-laws Ruth Stratton, Earlene Hall, Mae Pate and her husband Ray, nieces and nephews on the Smith and Hall sides of the families, as well as many other family members and friends.
Charles joined the U.S. Navy during WWII, then attended Western Kentucky University, University of Louisville (Harvard Business School), and Bellarmine. Charles then worked for Vermont American in Louisville for 20 years, and Leitchfield as the Plant Manager for 12 years before retiring in 1982.
Charlie or Red as many knew him, was a member of American Management Association and served as president in the 1960's. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Leitchfield, an honorary member of Zeta Chi Society; he also served on the hospital board, recreation committee. Charlie was instrumental in the building of what is now Legacy Golf course and the city swimming pool. He also took part in the Historical Society for Leitchfield. You were bound to see Charlie with a golf club or fishing rod in hand with a smile on his face, ready for a handshake and a joke or two.
Funeral service will be held for family and friends at 11:00 a.m. Monday (October 19, 2009) at Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield with Bro. Darrell Lyons and Bro Fred Whitmore officiating. Cremation will follow the service.
Friends may call at the Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday (October 18, 2009)
