David Lee Smith, 83, of Louisville, formerly of Sadler, KY, passed away Thursday, (May 7, 2026) at his sons’ residence.
He was born on February 16, 1943, in Caneyville, KY, the son of the late Elza Rosco and Daisy Sanders Smith.
David worked as a carpenter for many years and enjoyed camping, water skiing, hunting, fishing and farming. Farming was a big part of his life, and he especially loved caring for his cows and chickens. Family was very important to David, and he enjoyed spending time with those he loved.
He was a proud graduate of Caneyville High School and was honored to be a member of the 1962 Caneyville Purple Flash Region Championship Basketball team.
He is survived by his sons, Michael Smith (Lisa) of Fern Creek and Glen Smith (Cyndi) of Mt. Washington, KY; several step-children; seven grandchildren, Samantha, Jere, Nikki, Joshua, Austin, Justin and Amber; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Randall Smith (Pat) of Leitchfield; and two sisters, Deloris Bach (Paul) of Pennsylvania and Fran Davis (Merle) of Leitchfield KY. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Sherry Madden; a brother, Damon Smith; and a sister Jeanette Shirley.
Funeral services will be at 12:00 p.m. CST Wednesday, (May 13, 2026) at the Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield. Bro. Randy Meredith will be officiating. Burial will be in the Sanders Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Dermitt Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. CST on Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. Wednesday until time of services.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to benefit the Purple Flash Center in Caneyville at 202 East Maple St. Caneyville, KY.
