Doris Jean Shain Green, age 93, of Leitchfield, passed away Saturday January 17, 2026, at the Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center in Leitchfield, KY, surrounded by her loving family.
Doris was born in Pine Knob, Kentucky, on May 30, 1932, to the late Herman Shain and Ollie Cooper Shain. Doris was very proud of her Pine Knob upbringing and the lifelong lessons it instilled in her. After graduating from Caneyville High School in 1950, Doris attended Western Kentucky State Teachers College, before taking a job teaching in a one room school house. Doris taught at Sadler and Walnut Grove schools. On September 30, 1950, she married the love of her life, Marion Roger Green, in Charlestown, Indiana. Roger and Doris made their home in Leitchfield and raised their family there. Doris valued hard work and throughout her life held various jobs, she worked at the Louisville Store for many years. She learned to file taxes while working for Albert Thomason at Kentucky Farm Bureau, and later went out on her own, filing income taxes for years out of her home office. Later in life, she worked as a greeter and as visitation staff member for Dermitt Funeral Home.
Doris enjoyed working in her yard, flowers, especially her daylilies, and spending time with her family. She was especially close to her sister, Florene Goff, and Florene’s children and grandchildren. Doris was an excellent cook who lovingly prepared delicious meals for her family. In her kitchen was always a hub of activity and she made sure you left her house full. She was known for fried chicken, chicken and noodles, country hams, yeast breads, cakes and ice creams. Doris enjoyed sewing, and usually had several projects in progress. She was a member of the First General Baptist Church in Leitchfield for over 60 years.
Survivors include her son, Mike Green (Sheila) of Leitchfield, two daughters, Kathy Dennison of Leitchfield, and Salli Meredith (Gardner) of Munfordville; five grandchildren, Kristin Pierce (Keith), Chancellor Dennison, Shaina Gregory (Brian), Ashton Meredith and Eli Meredith; seven great-grandchildren, Roger, Sanning, and Lena Pierce, Keegan, Wyatt, and Holden Gregory, and Abe Witten. Other survivors include a brother-in-law, Kenneth Goff, many nieces and nephews, and a very special caregiver, Brenda Linder, who helped care for Doris for the last five years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Green, a son-in-law, Steve Dennison, a grandson, Kristofer Witten, and her sister, Florene Goff.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday (January 22, 2026) at 1:00 p.m. at the Dermitt Funeral Home with Bro. Wayne Clemons officiating. Burial will follow at the Deweese Cemetery in Pine Knob.
