Doris Jean Newton, age 84, of Leitchfield, KY, passed away Tuesday, (January 30, 2024) at her daughter's home in Leitchfield.

She was born on March 18, 1939 in Edmonson County, KY, the daughter of the late Hez and Lena Houchins Sanders.

In her younger years she worked at Kane's Industry and then later on the Wagon Wheel Restaurant owned by her sister. She and her late husband, James, then opened up Doris Kozy Kitchen which was a big success and is still missed by many people to this day. Together, they enjoyed many days of camping, crappie fishing riding dune buggies and, of course, cooking.

She is survived by her two children, Darrell Newton of Caneyville and Judy Wampole (Duane) of Leitchfield; three grandchildren, Robby Newton (Kim), who was more like a son, of Leitchfield, Keith Tarrence (Danielle) of Caneyville and Chris Aymond (Stacey) of Elizabethtown; four great grandkids, Cory Newton, Faith Tarrence, Hunter Aymond, and Ivan Aymond; two great great grandkids, Liam Newton and Addison Newton; and two sisters-in-law, Hazel Redmon (Hubert) of Caneyville and Nancy Newton of Leitchfield. Several step grandkids and great grandkids and many special nieces and nephews also survive.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Newton; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Newton; four brothers, Willard, Dempsey, Thomas and Kermit Sanders and six sisters, Lucille VanMeter, Daisy Smith, Effie Doyle, Bernice Newton, Maxcine Whobrey and Irene Sanders.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, (February 06, 2024) at the Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield. Bro. Donald Webb will be officiating. Burial will be in the Sanders Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the Dermitt Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday and from 9:00 a.m. Tuesday until time of services.
