Obituary
Frank B. Sanning, age 86, of Leitchfield, KY passed away on May 30, 2017.
Frank was born August 15, 1930 in Louisville, KY and was the youngest of two children of Frank F. and Winifred Sanning. He graduated from Manual High School in 1948 and attended the University of Louisville from 1948 – 1951, after which he joined the United States Air Force and served his country from 1951 – 1955.
Frank joined The Southern Optical Company, alongside his father in 1955. Frank started with Southern as an apprentice optician and obtained his optician license in 1957. When he left The Optical Corporation of America (previously known as The Southern Optical Company) he was the President and CEO.
During his tenure in the optical industry; Frank served on many national and governing boards, including President (two terms) of the Contact Lens Society of America, President and Director, National Academy of Opticianry; President and Director, American Board of Opticianry; Founding committee member of the National Contact Lens Examiners and Board member and Chairman of the Kentucky Board of Ophthalmic Dispensers.
Frank was frequently asked to served as a guest lecturer and/or visiting instructor to numerous universities including: University of Kentucky, Baylor University College of Medicine, and University of Cincinnati to address Ophthalmology students.
Upon his retirement, Frank decided to permanently relocate to Leitchfield to enjoy gardening, horseback riding, raising cattle and just "being" on his farm; which he did.
Frank is survived by his daughter, Linda S. Smith of Louisville, KY, son, Whit Sanning (Janice) of Suwanee, GA; grandchildren, Daniel Smith, Courtney Smith, Brittany Sanning Hartnett (Matt), and Blair Sanning, and great granddaughter, Kennedy Hartnett. His sister Nell Carrington and nephew Doug Carrington (Marcie) both of Leitchfield, KY also survive him.
In accordance with Frank's wishes, there will be visitation at Dermitt's Funeral Home in Leitchfield, KY on Sunday, June 4, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will be a private burial for the family at Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, KY.
In lieu of flowers, Frank would prefer donations be made to one of his charities; Grayson County Alliance, 125 Market St. Suite 3, Leitchfield, KY 42754; or Reflex Sympathetic Disorder Society, P.O. Box 502, 99 Cherry Street, Milford, CT 06460.
