Harley Ardell Stevenson, Sr. age 93, of Leitchfield, passed away Tuesday, (October 30, 2018) in Leitchfield, KY.
He was born on September 8, 1925 in Grayson County, KY, the son of the late William Harve and Vasta Miles Stevenson.
He was a carpenter, who had worked for Hughes Lumber. He was a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Rocky Mount. During his military career he was an undefeated boxer for the Navy. He enjoyed sports, and in the 1940's he was a pitcher for men's fast-pitch baseball on the Bloomington Team. In the 1960's he was a pitcher for the men's fast-pitch softball team in Leitchfield. He was an avid University of Kentucky Wildcats fan. He married the love of his life, Roberta Downs Stevenson on April 23, 1946. He enjoyed playing horseshoes, (winning many trophies) and playing corn-hole. He loved going to the Senior Center with his friends, and playing pool and Bingo. He was a dedicated and faithful member of the Church of Joy for over 70 years. He played guitar and led the congregation in singing there for many years. Harley was a quiet man who served the church doing anything he could do to help.
He is survived by his children, Patricia Elmore, Glefus Stevenson (Shirley), Beverly Stevenson, and Harley Stevenson, Jr. (Cindy) all of Leitchfield; ten grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and special friend, Wanda Masterson.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta; grandchild, Tabetha Shawn Valera; great-grandchild, Justin Blake Elmore; great-great-grandchild, James Earl Thomas Smiley (JET); son-in-law, Howard Elmore; four sisters, and six brothers.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, (November 3, 2018) at the Church of Joy in Leitchfield. Bro. Nathan Lowe and Bro. Donald Farris will be officiating. Burial will be in the Antioch Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Church of Joy from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday and from 9:00 a.m. Saturday until time of services.
Harley had requested in lieu of flowers that a memorial fund be established in his honor. Donations may be made to the Dermitt Funeral Home.
