Jewell Elizabeth Tomes, age 83, of Mt. Washington, KY, peacefully passed away Wednesday, (December 24, 2014) at her son's home in Trenton, KY, with her family at her side.
She was born on June 3, 1931 in Edmonson County, KY, the daughter of the late George Watson and Minnie Myrtle Gilbert Tomes.
She sang as a member of the Tomes Quartet, was an artist, loved gospel music, and was a lover of thrift stores. She once worked at the US Government Powder Plant in Indiana, and volunteered for Hospice as a personal care giver. Jewell was a member of the Shrewsbury Order of Eastern Star # 496, and was a member of the Beech Grove United Baptist Church.
She is survived by her sons, Ronald M. Embry and his wife, Sherry, of Trenton, KY, and Michael K. Nichols and his wife, Frances of Brandenburg, KY; a step-son, Jerry Hatton, Sr. of Louisville; a brother, Samuel R. Tomes and his wife, Laverne, of Mt. Washington, KY; a sister, Goldie Woosley of Louisville, KY; four grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by a son, Darrell Ray Embry; six brothers, Rev. Harlen Tomes, Junior Tomes, Marion Tomes, Sherman Tomes, Bill Tomes, and Carl Tomes; and two sisters, Ruby Hornback, and Pearl Darnell.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday, (December 30, 2014) at the Dermitt Funeral Home. Bro. Gary Woosley will be officiating. Burial will be in the Beech Grove United Baptist Church Cemetery.
An Eastern Star service will be held on Monday night at 6:00 p.m. (CDT) at Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield.
Visitation will be Sunday at the Schmid Funeral Home, 9500 KY 44, Mt. Washington, KY from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. (EST), and at the Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (CDT) Monday, and from 9:00 a.m. Tuesday until time of services.
