Obituary

Peggy Jean Cummings, age 90, of Cub Run, KY, passed away Wednesday, (June 17, 2026) at Signature Health of Hart County in Horse Cave, KY.

She was born on May 1, 1936 in Grayson County, KY, the daughter of the late Kirby and Ida Mae Hurt Wilson.

Her work ethic was unmatched over the years. Peggy held many jobs, from waitressing at Churchill Downs to directing traffic for school children before finding her calling as a school bus driver. She proudly served for 30 years with Hart County Schools, safely transporting and caring for generations of kids who adored her.

If you knew her, you knew that Peggy was a strong & independent woman who rarely sat still. She worked hard and cared deeply for those around her, especially the children she drove on her bus. She loved people and seemed to know everyone she met. Even after retiring, she didn’t slow down. You might have seen her working at the Cub Run Market or she may have been sitting with and caring for someone’s loved one. She had a heart of gold, never met a stranger, and truly didn’t know the meaning of the word “quit”!

She was a member of Anneta United Baptist Church, and in her free time she liked to work in her flowers, finding joy in their beauty. She enjoyed going to the casino (and was known to be pretty good at it) and traveling.

She is survived by her daughter, Pam Doyle of Grayson County; a grandson Beau Falk (Sammie) and many more grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Berl Cummings; a son, Wayne Thomas; a daughter, Carla Heninger; a granddaughter, Raven Welsh; two brothers, Walter & Dan Wilson; and a sister, Helen Wilson.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, (June 23, 2026) at the Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield. Burial will be in the Wilson Family Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the Dermitt Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday and from 9:00 a.m. Tuesday until time of services.

Peggy will be remembered for her kindness, her strength, her tireless spirit and the love she gave so freely to others. She made a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
