Rita Gayle Jones Mayes, age 70, of Leitchfield, KY, passed away Tuesday, (March 10, 2026) at Helmwood Healthcare in Elizabethtown, KY.

She was born on January 2, 1956, in Jefferson County, KY, the daughter of the late Cornelius David “Pete” Jones and Christine Jane Tinsley Jones.

Rita was an avid traveler who enjoyed exploring new places and experiences. She had a love for playing Scrabble and a deep appreciation for science fiction, particularly Star Trek. Rita also enjoyed needlework. Above all, she cherished the time she spent with her family and the memories they created together. She was a member of Wilson United Baptist Church.

She is survived by her two sons, Jacob Mayes (Jill) of Elizabethtown and Ben Mayes (Tiffany) of Leitchfield; one daughter, Jennifer Mayes-Laracuente (Brandon) of Frankfort; eight grandchildren, Zachary Mayes, Andrew Grant, Joshua Mayes, Jackson Mayes, Maddox Grant, Zoey Laracuente, Noah Mayes, and Ryker Laracuente; and stepbrother, Timmy Wells.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Wayne Wells and by Richard “Rick” Mayes, and her faithful little chihuahua, Samson.

In keeping with her wishes cremation was chosen and a Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, (March 13, 2026) at Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. CST to 5:00 p.m. CST.
