Virgil C. Mattingly Jr., age 86, of Brandenburg, KY, passed away Monday, (May 1, 2017) at the Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown.
He was born on February 17, 1931 in Louisville, KY, the son of the late Virgil C. Mattingly Sr. and Mary Pearl Cecil Mattingly.
He was a retired maintenance man from the Jefferson County Health Department, who enjoyed model boats, airplanes, and playing with the dogs and was of the catholic faith. He was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard.
He is survived by his son, Thomas Mattingly of Brandenburg, KY; two daughters, Joyce Carothers (Charlie) of Louisville, KY, and Betty Mattingly of McDaniels, KY; four grandchildren including, Dorothy Hazelwood (Delmar Vertrees) of Vine Grove, KY, Sue Russell (Titus) of Leitchfield, KY; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Shirley Johnson of California, and Laverne Wentzel of Louisville, KY; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy L. Owens Mattingly; his sons, Virgil C. Mattingly III, David H. Mattingly, and William Mattingly; and his twin daughters, Mary and Ann Mattingly.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, (May 4, 2017) at the Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield. Rev. Tony Bickett will be officiating. Burial will be in the Sanders Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Dermitt Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. until time of services.
